Sunlight Gets Good Exposure On NBC Nightly News

Did anyone catch last night's edition of NBC Nightly News? If you did not, you missed something big for our industry. The national news actually aired a news piece about the positive benefits of sunlight. Yes, that's right; the segment reported that more and more doctors agree that a moderate amount of sun exposure is the key to good health. Chief Medical Correspondent Robert Bazell, M.D., discussed two recent studies focusing on vitamin D levels and its association with improving heart health and reducing the rates of certain cancers. Michael Holick, M.D. also was interviewed for the segment. One study revealed that only 10 percent of the study participants had optimal levels of vitamin D in their bodies. The second study concluded that, because many people do not get enough vitamin D from food or supplements, more sunlight is the answer. Check out the news segment by clicking here.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

For the past month, much of the country has been pounded by Old Man Winter. Practically ever other day, our phone rings with relatives calling from the Northeast and Midwest who bemoan the cold temps, freezing rain and snow. Even though Phoenix is rainy and cold today, we don't have to worry about shoveling snow or ice storms that cause week-long power outages. So, I am curious if the severe winter weather has affected your tanning business. Please click here to take our poll. We would love to hear from you.

Out With The Old, In With The New

It's hard to believe that we are getting ready to say goodbye to 2007 and usher in the New Year. This year has been difficult for many, as the industry has struggled to find ways to attract more tanners to tanning salons nationwide.

That sentiment that has been echoed by all of the salons we have talked to during our final round of judging for the 2008 Top 250 Salons. Additionally, economy, weather and war were the main reasons for another borderline year.

However, there is hope on the horizon in the form of uniting as an industry to promote the benefits of indoor tanning. The future of our industry is at a pivotal point, and success hinges on what we do next. Instead of viewing each other as competition, we need to focus our energy on fighting our true competitors—the tanning critics who want to put us out of business.

There are a lot of positive things happening, and you should be a part of them. If you are not a member of the ITA, you need to become one. If you don't know what is going on in your own backyard, you won't be able to have a voice in your industry's future.

Be sure to check out the next issue of LOOKING FIT to see what Chicago-area salons are doing to combat unnecessary legislation. At a recent meeting, more than 200 salons decided to team up and devote 15 percent of their advertising space to promote the benefits of vitamin D and sunlight.

Don Hirsch, president of Chicago-based Ultimate Exposure Tanning Centers and member of the ITA Board of Directors, organized the meeting and says: "The time to act is now so we can change our business and get more tanners in the doors. In the past, no one really worried about regulations, but those times are behind us. Tanning critics can't pass legislation if public perception is in our favor. Now is the time to get involved at the local and national level."
